The Canadian shield(The Precambrian Shield) is an extensive structural unit of the Earth's crust composed of exposed basement rocks formed in the eon either, Archean or Proterozoic, which both form the Precambrian era that ended 544 million years ago. Originally formed during several rounds of mountain-building activity, Shield rocks are now among the most stable on Earth. Here is an interesting fact. The Canadian Shield is made up of different rocks. That's it. That's the cool fact. The reason this is so cool to any geographer is because it's not just made up of boring old rocks. There are all the three types of rocks that build up parts of the Canadian Shield. It is a large area of exposed Precambrian igneous and high-grade metamorphic rocks (geological shield) that forms the ancient geological core of the North American continent (North American or Laurentia craton), covered by a thin layer of soil. It is an area mostly composed of igneous rock which relates to its long volcanic history. Now i think that is what makes this place ROCK. Common that wasn't funny? I was working on that one all night.
Anyways, The Canadian Shield region of Alberta is located in the northeastern corner of the province. The region has many interesting landforms. Some of the landforms found in this region are Precambrian rocks and marshy depressions; there are hundreds of lakes in the Canadian Shield. Large bodies of water can be found in this region. They include the Slave River and Lake Athabasca. The landscape of the Canadian Shield region can be described as rocky and wet. A variety of wildlife can be found throughout the Canadian Shield region.
Some of these animals are the Peregrine Falcon, the Golden Eagle, Barren Ground Caribou, and the Arctic Fox. These animals live in this region because they can stand the cooler climate. There are many interesting occupations found in the Canadian Shield region. Some of the major occupations are forestry, making roads and railways, oil and gas, pulp and paper and mining tar. These occupations provide people with roads and railways, gas for their cars, and money to purchase homes and food. The Canadian Shield region offers a variety of sport and recreational activities. Sporting and recreational activities include fishing, hunting, hiking, and snowmobiling. These are popular activities in this region because there are lots of animals in this region and there is lots of water and snow in the winter. Here is another cool fact as well, did you know the Canadian Shield is a rich mineral ore field, full of diamond, nickel, gold, silver and copper.
That's basically what we have got on the Canadian Shield. Please feel free to leave creative comments below. ROCK ON GEOGRAPHERS!
